When Obama was still a baby, his father moved to Massachusetts to attend Harvard University and pursue a Ph.D. His parents divorced several months later and his father ended up moving back to Kenya. In 1965, Barack’s mother married a University of Hawaii student from Indonesia. They ended up moving to Indonesia a short time later, but by the age of 10, Barack’s mother sent him back to Hawaii to live with his grandparents because she was afraid for his safety in Indonesia. While living with his grandparents, Obama enrolled in the highly regarded Punahou Academy where he excelled in basketball and graduated with academic honors in 1979. After studying at Occidental College in Los Angeles for two years, Obama transferred to Columbia University and graduated in 1983 with a degree in political science. He moved to Chicago in 1985 and then entered Harvard Law School in 1988. He graduated magna cum laude from the school in 1991. After completing school, he returned to Chicago to practice as a civil rights lawyer. He also taught law part-time at the University of Chicago Law School for over a decade.
In 1992, he married Michelle Obama and in 1998 they welcomed their first daughter Malia, and soon after they welcomed their second daughter, Sasha in 2001. In 2004, Obama ran for the U.S. Senate and won, defeating multimillionaire businessman Blair Hull. Three years later he announced he would be running for president, and the rest is history as they say. He served eight years as President of the United States and was one of the more personable presidents in recent history. Life after the White House has been eventful for the Obama family. His wife Michelle released her ‘Becoming’ memoir in 2018. It sold more copies than any other book published in 2018. It reached that record-breaking number in just 15 days. Meanwhile, Barack and Michelle’s oldest daughter, Malia, got accepted into Harvard in 2016. As of 2019, Barack Obama’s net worth is $40 million. Before entering the White House, Obama had a net worth of around $1.8 million, so obviously him being president worked out for everyone involved. Needless to say, his wealth puts him in the mega-millionaires club which includes Jerry Seinfeld, Oprah Winfrey, and Jay Z.
